The Prophets (Perennial Classics) by Abraham J. Heschel

This is absolutely one of my most favorite books of all time.  This book was recommended by one of my favorite preachers today, Dr. Michael Brown.  For the last 15 or so years I’ve been very interested in the Prophets of Israel and thought I should read this book.  It is a book I go back to time and time again.  The author gets in the head and heart of the prophets and reveals things that are so profound I keep going back to get clearer understanding of these prophets.  Going chronologically through each prophet, the author reveals background and insight that is more interesting than anywhere else I have found.  I can see why today’s teacher, Dr. Michael Brown, lists this book as his all time favorite.  This is not a light read for those wanting a quick read.   It is my favorite on the prophets!!!  If you want to go DEEP into the heart and life of these prophets this is a book for you.

Luke (The NIV Application Commentary) by Darrell Bock

Dr. Bock has written the most thorough commentary in this series.  Many times I’ll read through his comments on a passage and what starts out as very basic becomes extremely profound.  I would highly recommend anyone interested in how these passages practically apply to our lives today to read through this commentary.
